Thursday, February 11th • AHA! • “Voices From the Waterfront” • 6:30 pm

Join us for a book signing and presentation for this newly released book about the port of New Bedford. The portraits of the many individuals who work the waterfront provide a window into the complexity of this dynamic industry. Books will be available for purchase and signing. No fee.

Join us in the Coachman’s House for a series of workshops focused on planning and preparing for the upcoming growing season. Under the guidance of Derek Christianson the topics covered will include: soil testing, new garden bed design and development, organic fertilizers and pest control, what crops to plant when, growing nutrient dense foods and more. There is no fee for garden programs; donations are appreciated!

 

Sunday, February 14th  • Valentine’s Day Brunch • Seatings at 11 am & 12:30 pm

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with someone special at the RJD Valentine’s Day Champagne Brunch. Enjoy sumptuous brunch offerings in the parlors of the Museum. Reservations are required at 508-997-1401 or www.rjdmuseum.org, $40 for members, $45 for non-members.

Sarah LaValley Garden Designs of Westport embraces only organic practices in the garden. Learn how cooperating with the organic elements of nature will not only beautify your landscape, but also strengthen it.

RJD volunteers will have the opportunity to experience the updated 5th grade History Program, tour the house (including the spectacular views from the cupola) with Cindy Barber, Educational Programming Coordinator at the Museum. No fee.

 

Thursday, March 11th • AHA! Night • “All Sewn Up” • 7:00 pm

New Bedford was one of the most important centers of textile production in the world at its peak in the early 1900’s. Bruce Barnes will discuss the people, buildings, and legacy of this long and eventful history and how it continues to affect the city in profound ways today. No fee.

 

Saturday, March 13th • 3:00 pm • Lydia Maria Child: Unsung Heroine
With Ray Rickman

Lydia Maria Child was the most important female American abolitionist of her age. She wrote An Appeal in Favor of that Class of Americans Called Africans in 1833 to petition that African Americans be permitted to vote, hold public office and serve on juries. The RJD and the New Bedford Historical Society are delighted to welcome Ray Rickman, a leading expert on Ms. Childs who has collected all twenty of her books in first edition format. Refreshments; members $8, non-member $10.

The Changing American Flower Garden:
Bringing Color, Fragrance and New Attitudes Home

In celebration of the RJD landscape, this symposium–the first of a three-year landscape series exploring changing tastes in gardening–will focus on flower gardens. From a look at tastes in gardening in the 19th and 20th centuries, to an exploration of contemporary designs that evoke memories of meadows and
wild places, to choosing the most successful perennials and annuals for a long season of interest in today’s New England garden, attendees will discover how the landscape through time links visitors and gardeners to the grand tradition
of American flower gardening

9:30 am • Landscape designer and worldwide garden traveler Nan Sinton explores two centuries of influences on American flower gardening as she shows how attitudes to garden spaces have evolved in “What were they thinking? The Changing American Flower Garden”.

10:15 am  • Stretch Break

10:45 am  • Gardener, author, lecturer and long time instructor at New York Botanical Garden, Keynote Speaker Page Dickey invites gardeners to discover how the floral bounty of meadows and natural places can be brought home to even the tiniest space in Bringing Wildness into the Garden.

11:45 am • Lunch and book signing with Page Dickey

1:00 pm  Joann Vieira, Director of Horticulture at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA, leads the planning and planting of the extensive gardens and dynamic indoor and outdoor container displays in this Zone 5 garden. She’ll reveal which flowers she chooses for an extended season of bloom in Tradition Meets Experiment: The Best Plants for a Flourishing Flower Garden.
2:00 pm • Program conclusion and informal questions with the speakers.

The program is in the Coachman’s House, luncheon in included. Reservations are required at 508-997-1401,
members $65, non-members $75.

 

Sunday, April 4th • Easter Egg Hunt • 12:00 noon

Continuing the tradition, the 23rd Annual Mrs. Duff Easter Egg Hunt will be hosted by the Easter Bunny on Easter Sunday. Starting at 11:30 am, children 2 to 10 years of age accompanied by an adult are invited to enjoy photo opportunities with the Bunny and refreshments. The hunt for eggs in the garden begins at 12:00 pm sharp. This event will be held rain or shine; the fee is $5 per child.


Thursday, April 8th  • AHA! Night • “Emergence!” • 5:00 - 8:00 pm

The RJD is proud to showcase the artwork of New Bedford Public School children as part of the citywide celebration of student talent and art. No fee.

 

Monday, April 12th • Friends of the RJD Meeting • 1:00 pm

Bruce Barnes of the New Bedford Preservation Society will lead a tour of the RJD historic neighborhood. No fee.

 

Monday, April 12th • Voices of Student Poets • 7:00 pm

In the tradition of Amelia Jones who greatly enjoyed poetry throughout the 85 years she lived at 396 County Street, the RJD is pleased to welcome area middle school students who will read their original poems in the parlors of the Museum. No fee.


Saturday, April 17th • Using Color to the Best Advantage in Flower Arranging • 9:00 am

Joanne Gilmartin, who elegantly transformed the parlors of the RJD for “Celebrate the Season 2009,” will share her talent and expertise in a spring floral arranging workshop. Using flowers that you might have in your personal garden, Joanne will demonstrate how color affects the composition of an arrangement and how to use it to the best advantage. The workshop will be offered in the Coachman’s House; members $10, non-members $12.


Thursday, May 13th • AHA! • “Community Places & Sacred Places” • 6:30 pm

The RJD will partner with the New Bedford Preservation Society to offer an evening neighborhood walking tour. Keith Middle School students, who participate in the RJD after school architectural program through Citizen Schools Apprenticeship Program, will assist as junior guides for the evening. No fee.

Tuesday, May 18th • Jazz Fest in the Garden • 7:00 pm

The RJD is proud to host our annual “Jazz in the Garden” program featuring four of the area’s premier high school jazz ensembles. Dartmouth, New Bedford and Old Rochester Regional High School bands and the New Bedford jazz choir will showcase their award-winning music under the tent. Join us to enjoy a terrific evening of music and pay tribute to the talent of these young musicians. No fee.

 

Thursday, June 10th • AHA! Night! • “Walking Tours” • 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Bruce Barnes of the New Bedford Preservation Society will be our guide for a tour of the neighborhood west of County Street, departing from the RJD at 6:30 pm.  We also invite the public to tour the RJD gardens, in full bloom, and learn about a recently completed Cultural Landscape Report that documents the history, use and design of this historic landscape.
